The Group of the Unified European Left at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has announced the nomination of Selahattin Demirtaş for the 2017 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize.
The Group of the Unified European Left (UEL), GUE/NGL group at the European Parliament, The Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) (Sweden)..., Enhedslisten – The Red-Green Alliance (Denmark), SP.NL (The Netherlands), Die Linke (Germany), Left-Green Movement (Iceland), SYRIZA (Greece), Kurds & Friends, TNI (Trans National Institute), Enkelmann Dagmar (Rosa Luxemburg Foundation), Kaiser Kerstin (Rosa Luxemburg Foundation) and Florian Weis (Rosa Luxemburg Foundation) are among the sponsors who support the nomination of Demirtaş the prize.
In its statement The UEL Group said that they believe Demirtaş greatly deserves the recognition of his enduring struggle in the name of human rights and especially in the name of the rights of the Kurdish population.
The Prize is awarded each year by the PACE to reward outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe and beyond. The 2015 Václav Havel Prize was awarded to veteran Russian human rights defender, Ludmilla Alexeeva and the award winner in 2016 was the Yazidi human rights activist – Nadia Murad.
The Václav Havel Human Rights Prize will be awarded on 9 October 2017 in Strasbourg.
