Berga, the first Catalan town that has approves twinning with Kobanê

Berga is the first Catalan town that has approved twinning with Kobanê. For the last weeks, the KurdisCat - Catalan Solidarity Kurdistan Committee (Desteya Katalan ji bo Piştgiriya Kurdistanê ) has been working in this line, but it was the September 19, after KurdisCat’s act at Ateneu Llibertari of Berguedà, when all the bases where established. Up to now, there have been five Italian cities that agreed to twin with this Kurdish city of Syria, where a four months brutal siege was carried out by the so called Islamic State destroying almost everything. Also from Kobanê was Aylan Kurdi, the boy that appeared dead in a Greek beach that raised awareness the public.

Thanks to the cooperation between KurdisCat and the Ateneu Llibertari of Berguedà, that have presented a draft motion, the town council approved on November 5th to twin with Kobanê. This is the greater option, out of the three, we propose, to encourage people and other cities to help Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan). Berga is governed by the Candidatura d'Unitat Popular (CUP) since May 2015 with 6 seats out of 17. The other parties are Convergència i Unió (6), Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (3), Partido Socialista Obrero Español (1) and Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds-Esquerra Unida i Alternativa (1). The decision has been supported by unanimity.
