Alevi Yol TV closed ... for insulting Erdogan

Radyo Televizyon Üst Kurulu (RTÜK, Radio and Television Supreme Council) decided to end the broadcasting of Yol TV, claiming that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, fomenting discrimination in society and praising terrorist organizations. Press freedom once again disturbed by Erdogan regime.

The RTÜK officials pointed out that the broadcasting of the channel was unlicensed. Yol TV is a television channel of the Alevi community.  Alevism is a heterodox branch of Shi'a Islam that is practiced in Turkey among ethnic Turks and Kurds. Sunni Turks have historically been persecuting Alevi people since the Ottoman era. Nowadays he size of the Alevi population is likewise disputed, but most estimates place them somewhere between 8 and 10 million people.
